Keith later infiltrated the Duelist Kingdom tournament to get revenge on Pegasus. He arranged a group of four Duelists including himself, Bonz , Sid and Zygor to try and cheat their way into the castle as the four finalists. Keith failed to get a chance to Duel Pegasus after losing to Joey Wheeler in the semi-finals, so he attempted to kill him by pulling out a gun. In the dub, the gun was removed. In the anime, Keith jumped up next to Pegasus with the gun, but Pegasus activated a secret switch, opening a trapdoor below Keith, causing him to plummet into the ocean.
In the manga, Pegasus stopped him, by inflicting a Penalty Game , turning Keith's hand into a gun, which uncontrollably shot himself in the head. Pegasus' death at the hands of Dark Bakura. He stole the eye and left a replica with Pegasus. Each player was represented by a character card, with Dark Yugi's being the "Pharaoh" card and Dark Bakura's being " Bakura, King of Thieves " his own character and " Akhenaden " Akhenaden's mummy's character. Each player had a deck of cards, which were initially blank.
When a player envisions an item or remembers a person from their past, a picture of the item or person appeared on the card. Each character card contained stats, include a ba gauge indicating their life force. If a character's ba gauge empties they die. Most characters have a single bar as their ba gauge. When characters are not given commands by their controller, they behave according to their own motives. The game featured seven Millennium Item cards, which at the beginning of the game are in possession of Dark Yugi's party, the pharaoh and the High Priests.
Each player had a special ability. The Seal of Memories on Marik Ishtar 's back contained a prophecy, "In the future, one will come who will wield the stone slabs of the three gods.
By the gods shall you know him for it is he in whom the pharaoh's soul resides. Ishizu Ishtar explained to Dark Yugi that the God cards were the modern equivalent to the stone slabs.
Dark Bakura got his host Ryo Bakura to build an elaborate diorama of the Egyptian kingdom for them to use in the game. Since Bakura's father was the owner of Domino City Museum , Bakura had access to a hidden room, where the diorama was mounted on a giant table, shaped like the Millennium Puzzle.
He, along with the rest of the group, returns to school. Yami Bakura takes over and uses his Ring to track down the Puzzle. When he is taken to an old warehouse, he sees that Yugi is dueling with Bandit Keith , possessed by Marik Ishtar. Yami Bakura tries to break Marik's control over Keith, sending Keith on a rampage where he breaks the Millennium Puzzle. The normal Bakura takes over and knocks Keith back to rescue Yugi. He helps to get back the pieces of the Millenium Puzzle, and Yami Bakura with his ring, possesses one piece of it.
Bakura then returns to school. Bakura explains that he doesn't know how he got the injury, but Marik helps him out, winning the trust of Yugi's friends. Bakura is taken to hospital by Solomon Muto. While Bakura recovers in the hospital, Yami Bakura takes over and escapes by overpowering Solomon. He acquires a Duel Disk and the required number of Locator Cards to enter the finals.
Bakura arrives at the quarterfinals, seemingly unaware of his injury. He ignores everyone's protests that he isn't well enough to duel and boards Kaiba Craft 3 where the duels are taking place. When asked how he made it to the finals, he tells his friends that he acquired the Locator Cards himself, but doesn't go into details on how he got them. Bakura is paired up against Yugi. When the Duel starts, Bakura turns into Yami Bakura.
To avoid defeat, Marik orders Yami Bakura to let Bakura take control. When this happens, Bakura emerges in the duel, still injured from the stab, and an attack from "Slifer the Sky Dragon" would risk his life.
Yami Bakura refuses to take the risk, as he needs Bakura to survive. He retakes control and lets Yami Yugi defeat him. He resolved to free Bakura from the Shadow Realm. Bakura wakes from his coma after Yami Yugi defeats Yami Marik and returns home. Bakura doesn't show up in this arc, but Yami Bakura shows up in a vision involving the Millennium Puzzle. Surprisingly, Bakura was mentioned by Joey on one occasion.
At the beginning of the Pharaoh's Memories arc, Bakura runs away from a voice , and attempts to hide in a church. That voice tells him that he still needs to acquire the other Millennium Items.
