As a Reminder All applications submitted are final and application fees will not be refunded. Paper applications are no longer accepted for draw hunts. Applicants may apply for up to 6 hunts for the same species on all individual and party applications combined, and may apply for the same hunt more than once. See individual hunt restrictions listed in the Drawing Supplement for additional details.
You will need to purchase a valid Alaska big game hunting license if you do not already have one. Alaska offers opportunities to harvest game and fur animals unmatched in any other state. However, no one may harvest game or fur animals without first acquiring the appropriate license and any tags, permits, or harvest tickets required for specific hunts. The links below include information on licensing options, purchasing licenses, acquiring permits and harvest tickets, and opportunities available to military personnel and elderly or disabled hunters.
Nonresident hunters must buy appropriate locking-tags to hunt big game in Alaska — this tag is locked on the animal immediately after the kill and must remain there until the animal is processed or exported. Please refer to the Alaska Hunting Regulations while planning your hunt to determine if you need a locking-tag.
Buy your big game locking-tags online. In addition, some areas require a permit to hunt waterfowl. See Waterfowl Hunting Permits to see if you need a permit. Most drawing hunts are available to residents and nonresidents and are awarded by lottery. The application period for drawing hunts is during November and December. Visit the Draw Information pages for more information.
The Habitat Section is also responsible for developing management plans and overseeing activities in Alaska's legislatively designated Special Areas and works to ensure activities within our state's refuges, critical habitat areas, and sanctuaries are consistent with the purpose for which the Special Area was developed. Many activities in Alaska's freshwater rivers, streams, and lakes and in our Special Areas require a permit from the Habitat Section. For more information on the Habitat Section mission, organization structure, and budget, please visit the Habitat Section Overview.
Emergency permits can be issued quickly if there is an immediate threat to people, property, or habitat. Habitat Section Offices.
