I think you are correct with secret patching of PS2 emulation, not only that I think they are still refining the PS1 emulation as well. I still actively check the few games that didn't work so well on my Euro 60 Gig PS3 half hardware half software emulation of PS2 and they run with less glitches now. I still like to play some of the old games, so its nice to see, but may go unnoticed by most folks. The biggest indication has been after 2. The last game I had that wouldn't work fully freezing after the title screen has now started working perfectly, its a PS1 game called Vib Ribbon.
I love that game and its never worked properly on my PS There is no po pup on here and by default this pop up appears to set the correct controller for the ps2 features of the ps3. If there is no pop up the game might not even be loading on a PS3. I had the controller on loaded the game up using the controller and the message popped up. If the controller is already on and the pop up shows how would it turn on a second time? Just tested it. MY PS3s aren't set to auto-load games as soon as the disk is inserted.
I when I load a disk I manually start them so my controller is on when I start the game. The indicator will turn on anytime your controller is not connected via USB. When you boot a PS2 game, your controller will turn off, and the indicator will prompt you to reconnect upon the game loading.
The odds of somebody connecting there controller via USb isn't terribly large, but it is there. The easiest way to know if its real or not? There will only be two ports, and later 40gb models have a black face. Earlier 60 and even 80's had a chromed strip. Also, look at where the memory ports would be. Would be awesome to be able to download games like SOTC for people like me who missed it I know I suck balls but I am still looking out for it when I am out and about Im gonna buy it online soon It would be nice if this is true, Sony probably been keeping it secret upgrading the emulation until it's bugs get worked out. I wouldn't understand it unless they was trying to get sales from the PS2 or make some big second announcement that the new PS3's have PS2 support with a big price cut.
Not the first time I'm seeing a video with this service mode enabled.. The ps3 in these videos is the same one, from Ruso on teknoconsolas. All this came from a spanish website.
The owner of this 40gb PS3 send it to Sony to repair and, the techies send it back with the factory mode enabled.
Video is totally true. I actually told him to make the videos more realistic as it looks like a fake but i can tell you its not. The fact that the video appeared on demonhades is due to demonhades jealousy for fame in the ps3 scene.

I'm there with you. I kinda skipped the last generation of gaming I own a 60gig EU launch version, and my console shows the Playstation2 logo when starting a PS2 game. All the videos around the net dont seem to show that.
Does the original 60gig version show the logo too? Is it because the PS3 is in service mode? Who knows! The lack of the 'Playstation 2' logo when a PS2 game boots up just made me think that the source of the TV was changed to that of a PS2.
Unless of course they have hidden that somehow on the video. Thats what it looks like. Sometimes when playing PS2 games there is no "PS2" image when the game loads. It will just go straight to the game. I agree, some games don't show the "Playstation 2" screen, and some do but it flicks on momentarily, much like in the video in this article.
Look closely and you can see it flicker on briefly, and to me it looks authentic, or at least how it does behave on some PS2 games running on my Euro 60 Gig launch PS3. I have a theory in that it has something to do with the way the resolution and scaling settings are coming into effect. You can see in these videos that the screen is ficking about like crazy before the game loads, at one point the tv looses complete signal momentarily tv goes blue.
I am inclined to believe these vids are real I even have an itchy feeling full PS2 emulation is coming very soon to newer PS3's :. Or was it N64 games??? I can't tell the Difference between a xBox game and a N64 game really!!!
Both look outdated!!! This little nugget of a rumor is killing me! Think about it logically: PS3 is proven to be a friggin' beast of a number-cruncher; I reckon it can chew up and spit out even the most demanding PS2 title with utmost ease. I will mark the official date Sony stops production of PS2 games. I just got so used to putting an Xbox game in my and it just worked - I knew PS3 was BC at release but had no idea they had removed it later. Most of the classics still haven't been patched to work yet such as Serious Sam 2, Oddworld:Strangers Wraith.
The original Halo has a bad framerate on , Armed and Dangerous seriously lowers in performance when using the Jet Pack and I can't hardly hear the ambient music in Oddworld: Munches Oddysee and the lightings a little odd.
Just seems like BC wasn't important this gen. Its paid off for me to be a early PS3 adopter with the EU 60gb during summer PS3 maxconsole. The 40 gig ps3 doesnt have an emotion drive or even a ps2 emulator so you cant play ps2 games on it It wont even recognise the disc format.. It sucks i know But you can play some ps1 games on it although the graphics may not be that great.. If you want to purchase a used or refurbished 80GB that is PS2 backward compatible, check either the box or the back of the console for its model number.
